*********************************************************************
HP JetAdmin for OS/2 Warp is a network printer administration and
management tool which provides remote administration of Hewlett-Packard
network printers.
With Hewlett-Packard JetAdmin for OS/2, network administrators can
manage network printers from their desks. Bi-directional communication
allows administrators and users to receive printer and job status
at their desks.
Bi-directional communications enable the following:
- True end of job, which means that the print job
is not removed from the OS/2 print spooler until
the printer confirms that the job printed
successfully.
- Extended printer status, which includes "cover open,"
"page printed," and "out of paper."
- Changes to settings in a printer from the OS/2 remote
control panel application.
The two main components of JetAdmin for OS/2 Warp are the Port Settings
and the Remote Control Panel. The Port Settings allows administrators
to install and configure ports for Hewlett-Packard network printers.
The Remote Control Panel, also known as the Printer Panel, allows
administrators to view and change printer default settings -- without
leaving their desks.

* 3.0 Port Settings *
* *
*********************************************************************
Hewlett-Packard Network Ports are created using the Port Settings
interface. An HP Network Port, used in place of an LPT port, redirects
output to a Hewlett-Packard network printer. The following steps
outline the creation and management of HP Network Ports.
*********************************************************************
* 3.1 Creating Ports *
*********************************************************************
Use the following steps to create a Hewlett-Packard Network Port:
1. Click on the printer object with the right mouse button.
NOTE: If you do not have print objects for your network-connected
printers, create them using the printer template in the
Templates folder.
2. Select Settings (Properties in Warp 4)
3. Select the Output Port tab.
4. Select the Install New Port push button.
5. When the Install New Port dialog appears, select the HP Network
Port icon and then click on the Install push button.
6. Type the name of the port in the Port Name dialog box. You can
use the default name or type a unique name for the port.
NOTE: The only method of changing a port name is to delete the
port and then recreate it using the new name.
7. Click OK to open the Port Settings Dialog.
8. Highlight your printer in the list.
The LAN H/W Address on a self test from your printer or JetDirect
external print server is displayed in the Address field.
NOTE: You may filter the list by pressing the filter icon found
in the toolbar at the top of the screen.
9. Click the "Replace" push button. The selected address is now the
configured address for this port.
10. Select the "OK" push button.
11. When focus is returned to the printer object Settings, select the
newly created port.
12. Close the Printer Settings to enable the new HP Network Port.
*********************************************************************
* 3.2 Port Settings Options *
*********************************************************************
1. The port settings interface is opened by double-clicking on the
port. The port can be accessed either through the printer object
or through the Spooler Port view.
2. The Port Options page shows the current port status.
3. The Printers page displays the available Hewlett-Packard network
connected printers. See section 3.3 or the on-line help for more
information on filtering the printer list.
4. The Server Options page shows current settings for the network
adapter(s) in the server. JetAdmin supports up to four network
adapters per server.
5. The Log page displays the contents of the error log.
NOTE: The error log file, HP.LOG, is a binary file. It can not
be read directly.
6. The TCP/IP page allows administrators to set TCP/IP discovery
options. This page is only available at the server.
7. The DLC page allows administrators to configure DLC discovery
options.
*********************************************************************
* 3.3 Filtering the Printer List *
*********************************************************************
If a large number of printers are shown in the printer list, it is
helpful to filter the list. Three filter options are available*.
1. Open the Port Settings as described in section 3.2 and select
the Printers page.
2. Select the Filter Icon from the Toolbar.
3. Select the appropriate filter from the drop-down menu.
The view can be set back to default by clicking on the filter icon
and selecting "clear all".
NOTE: Filter settings are returned to default (none) when the Port
Settings page is closed.
*A fourth filter option, Adapter, is available if JetAdmin detects
more than one network adapter in the server. This option applies to
IEEE 802.2 (DLC) only.)
*********************************************************************
* 3.4 Accessing Ports from a Client Workstation *
*********************************************************************
HP JetAdmin for OS/2 Warp allows an administrator to access and view ports
remotely from any OS/2 Warp client machine on the network. New ports
can not be created from the client workstations. New ports must be
installed from the server.
The Port Settings page is invoked from a client workstation through
the Network Printer object. The Port Settings interface is invoked
as described in section 3.2.
In order to access the network printer port settings remotely, the
following conditions must be met:
1. JetAdmin for OS/2 Warp must be installed on the server and the
client.
2. The client machine must be of a supported configuration. (See
Section 2.2 Supported Configurations)
3. The user must have administrator privileges on the network.
In addition, the client machines must have access to the port driver
at the server. This is done by one of two methods:
1. The domain is checked for an alias PRINTDRV at the server for
the directory that contains the HP Network Port Driver (HPPD.PDR).
If this is the same directory used for driver distribution, the
port driver HPPD.PDR must be in this directory.
Or:
2. The server will be checked for a directory share named PRINTDRV
pointing to a directory that contains HPPD.PDR.
*********************************************************************
* *
* 4.0 Remote Control Panel *
* *
*********************************************************************
The remote control panel in JetAdmin for OS/2 Warp allows administrators
to control printer default settings and enable/disable protocols on
the HP JetDirect Print Server.
*********************************************************************
* 4.1 Opening the Remote Control Panel *
*********************************************************************
The remote control panel is opened through any one of three methods.
1. From the Printer Object
1. Right-mouse click on the printer object on the desktop
2. Select Printer Panel
3. Select HP Printer
2. From the Output Port Page
1. Right Mouse Click on the Printer Object
2. Choose Settings
3. Choose the Output Port Tab
4. Right Mouse click on the port
5. Select Printer Panel
6. Select HP Printer
NOTE: An alternative method is to open the Spooler port
view and follow steps 4-6.
3. From the Port Settings
1. Open the Port Settings as described in section 3.2
2. Select the Port Options Page
3. Select the Remote Control Panel Icon (far left icon) from
the Toolbar at the top of the screen.
********************************************************************
* 4.2 Administrator Options *
*********************************************************************
Administrators can access the full Remote Control Panel from client
machines or from the server. This allows control of printer settings
just as at the server or from the printer's physical control panel.
In order to access and change settings to the network printer via the
remote control panel, the following conditions must be met:
1. JetAdmin for OS/2 must be installed. (Server or Client option.)
2. The client machine must be of a supported configuration. (See
Section 2.2 Supported Configurations)
3. The user must have administrator privileges on the network. (See
also 4.3 User Options.)
*********************************************************************
* 4.3 Administrator Options - SNMP Community Name *
*********************************************************************
A new capability has been added to allow administrators to specify
a SNMP "Set" Community Name to be used by the software when communicating
with a JetDirect Device. Administrators may access and change SNMP
information such as system contact and location settings through the
Remote Control Panel:
1. If the JetDirect Device supports "Set" Commands
2. The user has administrator privileges on the network. (See
also 4.3 User Options.)
3. The user/administrator knows the "Set" Password
4. If the "Set" Community Name used in the SNMP commands is correct.
*********************************************************************
* 4.4 User Options *
*********************************************************************
A user without administrator privileges may access the remote control
panel to view printer status. Non-administrators can only access the
printer status page.
*********************************************************************
* *
* 5.0 Supported Printers *
* *
*********************************************************************
The following printers are supported in a bi-directional mode:
HP LaserJet 4, 4Plus, 4Si, 4SiMX, 5, 5N, 5M, 5Si, 5SiMX, 5Si Mopier
HP Color LaserJet, Color LaserJet 5
HP LaserJet 4L, 4P, 5L, 5P, 6L, 6P (See Note 1)
The following printers are not supported in a bi-directional mode:
HP LaserJet, LaserJet Series II, LaserJet IID, IIP, IIP Plus
HP LaserJet IIIP, III, IIID, IIISi
HP DeskJet Printers
HP DesignJet Plotters
Note 1: These printers are supported in a bi-directional mode only
when connected to a JetDirect EX or JetDirect EX Plus3 print server.
Note 2: The IEEE 802.2 (DLC) protocol is only supported on Port 1
of the JetDirect EX Plus3 Print Server. TCP/IP is supported on all
three ports.
*********************************************************************
* *
* 6.0 TCP/IP *
* *
*********************************************************************
With JetAdmin for OS/2 version A.03, network administrators can now
create ports and manage printers via the TCP/IP Protocol.
*********************************************************************
* 6.1 Assigning IP Addresses *
*********************************************************************
In order for HP JetAdmin to communicate with a JetDirect print server
via TCP/IP, the JetDirect print server must have a valid IP address.
JetAdmin does not provide a mechanism for configuring IP addresses.
The JetDirect print server can be assigned an IP address via the
following mechanisms:
Front Panel
Telnet
BOOTP
DHCP (See Note)
RARP
Note: When the JetDirect print server is configured via DHCP, it is
strongly recommended that the JetDirect device be given a permanent
lease. JetAdmin assumes that the JetDirect device will maintain its
IP address.
To prevent JetAdmin from using TCP/IP for printing, deselect TCP/IP
from the Network Types box on the Port Options page.
*********************************************************************
* 6.2 TCP/IP Printer Discovery Options *
*********************************************************************
HP JetAdmin for OS/2 Warp offers several TCP/IP discovery options for
both local and remote subnets. These options allow the network
administrator to decide how printers will be discovered on the network.
The default option is a local subnet broadcast. A local subnet ping
is also available. These two options are mutually exclusive.
NOTE: The local subnet is determined based on the IP address and
Subnet Mask configured for the Server's primary NIC.
The administrator can also choose to disable TCP/IP discovery, or
search IP addresses located in a file. For more information on these
options, please view the on-line help.
*********************************************************************
* 6.3 Advanced TCP/IP Printer Discovery Options *
*********************************************************************
The advanced TCP/IP discovery options include an address range search
and remote subnet search.
JetAdmin will search a range of IP addresses. This type of search is
valid for local and/or remote subnets. Multiple ranges may be searched.
JetAdmin can also be configured to search a remote subnet. When an IP
address on a remote subnet is entered, JetAdmin converts the given IP
address to the subnet address, based on the subnet mask.
JetAdmin will only allow each subnet to be entered once. The subnet
broadcast and subnet ping options are mutually exclusive for a given
subnet.
For more information on the Advanced TCP/IP Discovery options, please
view the on-line help.
*********************************************************************
* *
* 7.0 IEEE 802.2 (DLC) Tuning Adjustments *
* *
*********************************************************************
The information provided about changing network parameters is provided
for convenience only. For the most current information, or for
details about changing network parameters, see your IBM LAN Server
or Warp Server network administrator documentation.
Network Printer discovery via DLC is now controlled from the DLC page
in the Port Settings notebook. The default setting is a single DLC
broadcast. The administrator can disable discovery, or set the polling
option to send a broadcast packet at regular intervals.
FEATURE RESOURCE REQUIREMENT
=========================== ======================================
Running JetAdmin 1 IEEE 802.2 SAP
for OS/2 1 IEEE 802.2 Link Station per Printer.
*See Note 1
=========================== ======================================
Heavy network utilization. Increase T1 timer, starting with the
or printer(s) configured value 1, until the print server is no
across bridge(s) from print longer querying the printer for an
server acknowledgment.
=========================== ======================================
Note 1: SAPs and Link Stations settings are modified through MPTS (LAPS).
In addition to increasing the number of Link Stations, verify
that the number of reserved Link Stations on the Server options
page (see section 3.2) is equal to or greater than the number of
printers to be configured on the server.
TIMER (*See Note 2)
=========================== ======================================
Inactivity Timer (Ti) The Inactivity Timer (Ti) is a multiplier
that determines how often the IEEE 802.2
protocol checks an inactive link to verify
that the link is still operational. This
time is ignored unless your own IEEE 802.2
application is used directly. This parameter
value should be 5 to 10 times the Response
Timer (T1).
=========================== ======================================
Response Timer (T1) The response timer is a multiplier that
determines how long the sending adapter
waits for an acknowledgment before querying
the partner's link station status. This
parameter value should be large enough
to account for the total delays that a
frame would normally encounter within
the sending workstation, the network, and
the receiving workstation.
=========================== ======================================
Acknowledgment Timer (T2) The acknowledgment timer is a multiplier
used to determine the amount of time that
an acknowledgment for a received frame is
delayed when the number of frames sent is
less than the Receive window count.
=========================== ======================================
Network Timer (Tnet) This timer is for support reference only.
NOTE: This timer should only be modified
upon advice from an HP Support Center.
=========================== ======================================
Tq The Tq timer is used by the Port Settings
Interface. This timer is for support
reference only.
NOTE: This timer should only be modified
upon advice from an HP Support Center.
Note 2: The current timer settings are displayed on the Server options
page (see section 3.2).
*********************************************************************
* *
* 8.0 Printer Drivers *
* *
*********************************************************************
Printer Drivers for OS/2 Presentation Manager applications are available
from HP and IBM. To download the latest version of the OS/2 printer
drivers, see section 14, Technical Assistance.
The LASERJET.DRV OS/2 PCL driver for HP printers is supported by Hewlett-
Packard.
OS/2 PostScript Drivers are supported by IBM.
*********************************************************************
* 8.1 Automatic Driver Installation *
*********************************************************************
The LAN administrator can set up a share to allow clients running
this software to download required print drivers from a common place.
This is useful when the print server is using a print driver that
is not yet installed on the client. When the client creates a
network print object referencing the print server's shared print
queue, the print object will first check to see if the required
print driver has already been installed on the client. If the driver
is not installed on the client, the print object will look in the
following places for a path to the print driver:
1. The spooler will look in the OS2 system INI file
for application name PM_SPOOLER_DRVSHARE. The
keynames for this application name will be print
server names; the keyvalue will be the path to
the print drivers that can be downloaded to clients.
If the application name is found, the spooler will
use the keyvalue for the print server requested or
the first keyvalue if the print server requested is
not a keyname.
The following is an example entry for print server
PRINTSRV on a LanServer Domain. This assumes all
clients have a "net use" in place for a drive that
contains the print drivers.
App Name Key Name Key Value
--------- --------- ---------
PM_SPOOLER_DRVSHARE LS:\\PRINTSRV X:\DRVS
2. If no PM_SPOOLER_DRVSHARE entry exists, the print
server will be checked for a directory share named
PRINTDRV.
3. If neither of the above finds a path to print drivers,
the user's logon domain "LS:\\*ALIAS" will be checked
for an alias name PRINTDRV.
The path returned by one of the above methods will be used by the
print object as follows:
- Search the root of the path for packed files (*.DR_)
- Search the root of the path for unpacked files (*.DRV)
- Search the subdirectory OS2DRV of the path for packed
or unpacked files
- Search the subdirectory PMDD_n of the path, where n
is the OS/2 printer driver diskette number and the
subdirectory contains the OS/2 printer driver diskette
contents
For example, to share all OS/2 printer drivers, the
administrator can create the following directories:
a) D:\DRVS
b) D:\DRVS\PMDD_1 - contains OS2 print driver diskette 1
c) D:\DRVS\PMDD_2 - contains OS2 print driver diskette 2
d) D:\DRVS\PMDD_3 - contains OS2 print driver diskette 3
e) D:\DRVS\PMDD_4 - contains OS2 print driver diskette 4
f) D:\DRVS\PMDD_5 - contains OS2 print driver diskette 5
The administrator can then set up a share for users to the
D:\DRVS directories.
*********************************************************************
* *
* 9.0 Enhanced Spooler *
* *
*********************************************************************
This version of JetAdmin for OS/2 Warp requires the enhanced spooler
from IBM. The enhanced spooler, installed by SpoolerPak version 8.253 or greater,(see section 2.0 Installation)provides additional views to
the user. These views are the Port View and All Jobs View.
The Port View shows the current status of those ports selected in
the output port tab of all printer objects. This view will flicker as
the status of the ports is updated.
NOTE: You can open the Port Settings interface by double-clicking
on the HP Network Port in the Spooler Port View.
The All Jobs View shows the status of all jobs in the spooler.
These views are opened using the following steps
1. Click on the printer object with the right mouse button
2. Click on the Open arrow button
3. Select the appropriate view from the list
*********************************************************************
* *
* 10.0 Redirecting LPT Ports *
* *
*********************************************************************
You can redirect an LPT port to a local print object by using the SPOOL
command and specifying the print object name as the output device. The
syntax of this command is as follows:
SPOOL /D:LPT1 /O:QUEUE1
Where "QUEUE1" is the physical name of the printer object, (as seen
on the View page of the printer object's settings), and LPT1 is the
LPT port to redirect
For more information, type "help spool" from an OS/2 prompt or consult
your OS/2 documentation.
NOTE: A "NET USE LPT1: \\MACHINEID\NETNAME" will supersede the SPOOL
command.
For more information on the NET USE command, type "net help net use" at
an OS/2 prompt or see your LAN Server documentation.

*********************************************************************
* *
* 12.0 Known Defects *
* *
*********************************************************************
There are a few known defects with using HP JetAdmin for OS/2. A
detailed list of the known defects follows.
1. Problem: Coexistence with other DLC based printing solutions not
supported.
Cause: HP JetAdmin for OS/2 Warp and other DLC based printing
solutions, such as Lexmark's MarkVision, can not run on the same
server due to limitations within IBM's IEEE 802.2 implementation.
IEEE 802.2 uses the process id in communication with DLC applications.
The OS/2 spooler process runs all port drivers as threads of the
spooler process. Therefore, all port drivers share the same process
id, which causes unpredictable results.
Workaround #1: Configure all HP Network Ports to use the TCP/IP
protocol for printing. Deselect the DLC protocol on the Port Options
page.
Workaround #2: Install only one vendor's printing solution per
print server.
2. Problem: With certain models of Hewlett-Packard printers, the
Remote Control Panel capabilities list on the status page shows
"Installed RAM: 0MB".
Cause: Unknown
Workaround #1: Use HP WebJetAdmin to display the device
capabilities.
Workaround #2: Print a self test on the printer to determine the
actual installed printer memory.
*********************************************************************
* *
* 13.0 Troubleshooting *
* *
*********************************************************************
This section is intended to provide some basic troubleshooting hints.
It is not meant to be all-inclusive. If your particular issue is not
addressed in this section, please contact HP Customer Support for
further assistance.
If JetAdmin for OS/2 Warp is not functioning as you would expect, you
may wish to re-initialize the HP JetAdmin software by disabling and then
enabling the spooler. For more information on disabling the spooler
type "help spooler" at an OS/2 prompt.
1. Problem: No printers appear on the Printers page in the Port
Settings interface.
What to Check:
For DLC:
Make certain the IEEE 802.2 protocol has been installed on the
server. If IEEE 802.2 has been installed, check the Server Options
tab and verify that reserved link stations is not set to 0. Also
at the Server Options tab, you can check which SAP is in use by
JetAdmin. JetAdmin will select 0xc400 if it is available. Make
certain that an IEEE 802.2 SAP is available.
For TCP/IP:
Verify the appropriate printer discovery options have been selected
on the TCP/IP page.
2. Problem: The printer you wish to configure does not appear on the
Printers page in the Port Settings Interface.
What to Check:
For DLC:
Make certain that the printer is powered on and connected to the
network. Verify that the DLC/LLC status on the self-test page shows
"READY". On large networks, it is sometimes necessary to refresh
the list several times for all printers to appear. Make certain
that the printer and Print Server are not separated by a router.
Look for any filters which may be enabled on the Port Settings
'Printers' tab. If the printer still does not appear in the list,
try a different network cable.
Workaround: Type the printer address in the Selected Address box.
3. Problem: The Port Settings screen does not open, instead the screen
goes blank for a moment and then returns to the OS/2 desktop.
What to check: Verify that the file HPPDEX.EXE is in the \OS2\DLL
directory. IF this file is missing, copy HPPDEX.EXE from the install
directory to \OS2\DLL or reinstall HP JetAdmin for OS/2 Warp.
4. Problem: After adding the 9th port, the port view reads
"Unrecoverable error; see log file". The Port Settings Error Log
reads "Maximum number of printers already configured, to add more,
please increase the maximum link stations in MPTS (LAPS)."
What to check: By default, LAN Server allocates 8 link stations.
By default, JetAdmin will reserve all 8 link stations. First, check
that link stations are equal to or greater than the number of
JetDirect connected printers on the network. If link stations are
greater than 8 and this message still appears, open the Port
Settings, select the Server Options tab, then select the edit icon
from the toolbar. Increase the number of reserved link stations to
the desired number of printers.
5. Problem: After installing HP JetAdmin for OS/2 Warp, other DLC
based applications no longer work.
What to check: By default, JetAdmin will reserve all available
link stations. Open the Port Settings interface, select the Server
Options tab. Decrease the number of reserved link stations. It may
also be necessary to increase the total number of link stations in
MPTS to allocate sufficient link stations for JetAdmin and other DLC
based applications.

TABLE OF CONTENTS
A. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
B. CID REQUIREMENTS
C. KNOWN ISSUES
*************************************************************************
A. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
For OS/2 Warp 4, there is no need to install the Spooler Pak.
The Spooler Pak version 8.253 is required for HP JetAdmin for
OS/2 Warp to function properly on OS/2 Warp 3.x based systems.
HP JetAdmin for OS/2 does not support DLC protocol printers with
OS/2 Warp Server SMP. TCP/IP protocol printers are supported.
HP JetAdmin for OS/2 supports a maximum of 32 ports per server.
*************************************************************************
B. CID REQUIREMENTS
HP JetAdmin for OS/2 version A.03.10 has been enhanced to allow a CID
installation of queues and ports. This capability is dependent on
obtaining a new version of the Remote Multiple Printer Installation
program (RINSTPRN.EXE) from IBM. To obtain RINSTPRN.EXE visit the
IBM Software Choice website:
http://www.software.ibm.com/os2warp.
For HP Network Printers, the keywords vary somewhat from those found
in the IBM sample response files. The following examples should be
used for installing HP Network Ports.
Example 1: DLC Port
ADDPORT
NAME=PORT1
PORTDRIVER=HPPD
SRCPATH=c:\os2\dll
CARD_ADDRESS=0 - 080009B492B6
CONN_TYPE=0

PORT=PORT1
DRIVERNAME=LASERJET.HP LaserJet 5/5M
ENDQUEUE
DEFINEQUEUEPROPS
ORIENTATION=Landscape
DUPLEX=Book

*************************************************************************
C. KNOWN ISSUES
Issue: All printers are not discovered with TCP/IP broadcast
discovery selected.
Cause: Broadcast discovery results can vary based on network
bandwidth, network latency, JetDirect card status, and
NIC BIOS and drivers.
Solution: Open the JetAdmin Port Settings notebook and select the
'TCP/IP Discovery' page. Change the selected 'Search
Local Subnet' option from 'Broadcast' to 'Subnet Ping'.
Issue: After changing the 802.2 Queue Elements setting to 1400,
the message "unrecoverable error, see log file" appears
when attempting to access the port view.
Solution: Verify that the setting for Queue Elements in JetAdmin
does not exceed the value for Maximum Queue Elements in
MPTS.
Issue: Printers discovered on remote subnets appear in the
printers list but do not show complete printer status
Solution: This behavior is typically observed when discovering
a printer across multiple routers. The correct status
of the printer is displayed in the Port Options page.
Issue: The Spooler Pak can not be installed on an OS/2 Warp 4
system.
Solution: There is no need to update the spooler on OS/2 Warp 4. |
